Divorce and Your Washington State Insurance

Every insurance policy owner in Washington State should be aware that polices are effective only in so much as they are current. A major change such as a divorce is a classic example of when a contract needs to be adjusted. Divorce is generally a very difficult time, however, it is important to keep a clear head and assess all of your insurance products to see what needs to be changed.

Gather all of your insurance contracts together. Once a divorce is finalized and you have confirmation where you will be living, who will keep the car and other key issues, then you should contact your insurance agent. You may need to change home, life, heath, and auto insurance policies. Policies in your name that have your ex-spouse listed may simply need to be adjusted. Joint policies may need to be cancelled and a new contract issued. Consider also if you are listed on policies in your spouse’s name, such as their employer health policy. There are several scenarios, so be methodical to ensure everything is covered.

Updating your insurance need not cause a major headache. For advice at any stage, simply contact your Washington insurance agent who can help run through what’s needed.
